Timothy "Tommy" Manastersky
MARCH 7, 1929 - MARCH 11, 2012

tommy 01We were deeply saddened to hear that Tommy Manastersky, passed away on Sunday. At the club, most of us knew Tommy as a gentleman who was quick with a smile, a helping hand and a good story. Each windy summer afternoon would find him rigging and tuning Carol’s sails, carrying them down to the water and and then keeping a loving eye on her (and all of us) while she was on the lake.

tommy 02Tommy may not have been a windsurfer, but he was an unparalleled athlete. Our Tommy played both hockey and football professionally, winning the Grey Cup with the Montreal Alouettes in 1949 and playing defense with Rocket Richard’s Montreal Canadians in the 1950-1951 season! On the (many) days when the wind did not blow, Tommy would regale us with jaw-dropping stories about his career. But they pale in comparison to the story that we can now tell: we shared the beach with a two-sport Canadian hero.

“Mr. Manners” was a TWC member since 1989 and, as Alan Backlund, our club’s de facto historian, says, “possibly earlier as records before 1989 are on paper and hard to find”. He also served as a club director which gives him the distinction of having been our first and only non-windsurfing director.

Over the decades, Tommy worked hard for us in many other capacities. If you close your eyes, you can probably still see him working the barbecue at countless events.

Our heartfelt condolences go to his beloved Carol, Tim, Tony, Larry and Bill.

We will miss Tommy very much.

bb playbookThe OSA is under pressure to prove that there are a lot of sailors in Ontario.

The OSA has traditionally charged membership per club, rather than per sailor to make everyone's life easier, but the government has decided to take this too literally. Long story short, we need to establish that members of Ontario sailing clubs know they are members of the OSA. Filling out the attached form will go towards demonstrating that. Additionally, whoever submits their completed for will be entered for a chance to win a RIM Playbook!

Once again a group purchase deal is being organized in order to continue the growth of Kona One Design racing in Canada. This board is not only for racing but is a board that works in all kinds of conditions and is good for all ages and levels of windsurfers. Listed below is the price of a new Kona and full rig. Unfortunately, we in Canada, have to add HST to the cost (13%). To find out more about Kona go to www.konaone.com.

To help get the Kona class going in Canada, Bruce at Silent Sports has offered a special deal, matching the Kona distributors discount with his own, increasing it to approx. 30% (if 15 boards are ordered) a bit less if only 10 boards are ordered.

Thank you to TWC Member, Carla van der Kleij, for submitting a short video edited by her nephew Jeff, capturing some great footage of some rare 5.5 sailing conditions at the club this season. Additional thanks to Yo Vanderkley's (Carla's sister/singer/songwriter) for the audio and Barry Holtzkener for recording the footage.
