Learn to Windsurf

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to able swim?

Yes.  All participants must be able to swim independently for a minimum of 25 meters and must be capable of participating in moderate physical exercise.

Is there a minimum age for adult lessons?

All participants must be a minimum of 18 years old by December 31.

Is the equipment provided?

All windsurfing equipment is provided. We have a very large selection of windsurfing boards and rig (sail) sizes to suit students of all sizes and abilities.  We also provide personal floatation devices (life jackets), wetsuits and neoprene booties but some students prefer to bring their own.

Do I really need a wetsuit?

Wetsuits are strongly recommended in June, are preferred by many people in July but are usually unnecessary in August. TWC has wetsuits and booties available but cannot always guarantee optimal sizing for everybody.

For students who wish to bring their own, "shortie" wetsuits (short arms and legs) are the most versatile and can be purchased from many stores for under $100. Basic neoprene booties or water shoes are available for about $30. PFD's (life jackets) must be government approved and fit properly.  Economical sources include Canadian Tire, Walmart, Costco and Amazon. Higher quality gear is available from Silent Sports, Board Sports, Fogh Marine and MEC.

What do I need to bring?

All students must bring:

  • Bathing suit and t-shirt (quick dry if possible) to wear on the water.
  • Hat, sunglasses (with strap) and sunscreen.
  • Towel and change of dry clothes.
  • Back pack or gym bag.
  • Snacks and fluids (TWC has a fridge).
  • A padlock for your locker (optional).

Where do I change and leave my stuff?

TWC has change rooms and lockers in the clubhouse but you must bring your own lock. We recommend that you leave valuable items at home and we cannot be responsible for any loss or damage to your possessions.

Where is TWC located and how do I get there?

TWC is located on the Outer Harbour near Cherry Beach. The address is 2 Regatta Road, Toronto, ON. The clubhouse is about 500 meters east of the Cherry Beach bus stop along the Martin Goodman Trail bike path. It is also near the south east corner of the Cherry Beach Sports Fields.

Free parking is available for students in the club’s parking lot during the lessons.  All day bus service from the subway to Cherry Beach is available. For TTC schedules, maps and directions, go to Contact TWC.

Do I need to be a member of TWC to take lessons?

No. It is not necessary to be a member of TWC to take lessons.  However, students who register for a regular course (four lessons) are eligible to become a member at no extra charge.  See Registration for details.

Can I just rent equipment if I already know how to windsurf?

No. The club’s equipment is only available for students in our lesson program as well as participants in our Stay Hooked practice program.

Who are the instructors?

TWC instructors are highly qualified and experienced with Sail Canada instructor certification and prerequisites in First Aid, CPR and water safety.  The coach boat drivers are fully licensed. Some instructors are also accomplished racers at the provincial or national level.
